I laughed aloud at Giovanna Battaglia's stylish wit when I saw the title of this editorial in the February issue of W Magazine: "Sporty Spice." Gio invokes the Spice Girls — divertente! Her cleverness does not end with the title either, Giovanna's styling of these images is brilliant, her sense of color and form is exquisite. Tom Munro snapped the vivid spreads. I must say this is sporty chic at its finest.

Giovanna Battaglia: On The Job

W Magazine took the time for a fascinating chat with their contributing fashion editor, Giovanna Battaglia, about her job and what it takes to make it as a stylist in the fashion industry. I love that Gio mentions she was originally inspired by watching the work of stylist Charlotte Stockdale for the Dolce & Gabbana campaign. I love also her mother's idea to cast Giovanna in a reality series (I suggest naming it simply STILE!), and that Signora Battaglia actually appears in the video herself in a quick series of stills from her own modeling days. This lovely video is the first installment in a new series by W, "Inside the Magazine," which focuses on the hardworking people behind the scenes in fashion. Complimenti, W, ispirazione!

Giovanna Battaglia For Carolina Herrera Spring/Summer 2013

For the spring advertising campaign for Carolina Herrera, Giovanna Battaglia collaborated with photographer Nathaniel Goldberg and model Jacquelyn Jablonski to create starkly surreal images that burn into your memory. Others contributing to the campaign were makeup artist Gucci Westman and hair stylist Shon. Note that Carolina Herrera also engaged Gio to style her most recent collection for the runway in September.

Giovanna Battaglia: Optical Allusions

Giovanna Battaglia has a natural affinity for the surreal and the editorial "Optical Allusions" which she styled for the January issue of W Magazine is a knockout. Her reduction of the ogling men to a single eyeball slays me, so cyclopean. I love the opening line, too: "With bold strokes and graphic silhouettes, designers are harnessing art's power to challenge the eye." Ava Smith and Bette Franke posed for the optical overload while Roe Ethridge captured it on film. Seldom has black and white been more stimulating... Brava, Gio!
